History

(Above) Antonio Ferris met with leaders of the U.N. World Food Programme in Rome, Italy
While a sophomore in high school Antonio published a free Android smart phone App that helped people around the world. News agencies picked up the story and fellow students asked him to show them how to make their own Apps leading Antonio to decide to start an organization dedicated to helping others through the application of our ever advancing science and technology. Science Helps was founded by Antonio Ferris but he had to recruit three adult board of director members in order to apply for non-profit 501 (c) 3 status and complete the paperwork.
Antonio didn’t want Science Helps to be limited to just learning how to program and publish Apps, so he began looking for other opportunities for high school students to help others through technology. One avenue he found was freerice.com a free website that donates rice based on you answering questions correctly – helping students get better grades while helping end world hunger. He contacted the organization that owned the website and during the summer of 2015 Antonio Ferris met with leaders of that organization – the U.N. World Food Programme in Rome, Italy and discussed incorporating the Freerice.com internet initiative into the future plans of Science Helps. Shortly after this meeting, the very first Science Helps chapter was formed at the BASIS Mesa school in Arizona in September 2015. Since then Antonio has found additional opportunities for high school students – or any person that has a computer and internet access – to help others. One such group is World Community Grid where you install a free program that allows your computer to assist scientists with solving major problems like finding cures to diseases, when you aren’t using the computer. As of October 2nd, 2016 the Science Helps group has returned 12,079 results.
Antonio created the Science Helps logo to incorporate both the idea of helping people (helping hand) and powerfully transformative technology (light bulb). He next created the Science Helps website (with the help of Brandon Charles) to allow others throughout the world to succeed at helping others through the use of science.
Science Helps is a young, energetic, science-oriented, and optimistic organization devoted to creating a better future for all of us. Take this opportunity to add what you can accomplish today to what we collectively achieve for tomorrow!
